The main season starts in March and lasts until October.

Bali offers its tourists amazing nature, coastline, beautiful culture and a very specific and tasty cuisine. Many people travel here for a few weeks, so we’ve put together a 2 week itinerary that includes some of the best the island has to offer.

Of course, it is not possible to explore all the areas and visit all the beautiful places in this time, but it is still enough time to fall in love with the island. So let’s get to it.

Our 14-day itinerary includes 13 nights divided as follows:

3 nights Uluwatu

2 nights Nusa Penida island

3 nights Ubud

3 nights Munduk

2 nights Canggu

You’ll really enjoy everything with this itinerary. The beautiful coastline and great vibes in Uluwatu, the gorgeous beaches and snorkeling in Nusa Penida, the enchanting nature and rice fields in Ubud, or the breathtaking waterfalls in Munduk. Finish your holiday in tourist favourite Canggu, where you’ll enjoy luxury restaurants, beach clubs and the best shopping places.

Uluwatu

The perfect holiday in Bali couldn’t begin any other way than in Uluwatu. It takes about 30 minutes to get here from the international airport and you’ll pay about 13-15€ for a taxi.

If you’re looking for affordable bed and breakfast hotels, check out Maha Lokha hotel, located in a quiet part of Uluwatu. You can get everywhere in a few minutes by a scooter. We definitely recommend a visit to Uluwate Temple, Melasti or Nungallan beach, or the best sunset spot called Karang Boma Cliff.

Nungallan Beach.

Nusa Penida

From Uluwatu, you’ll transfer to the port of Sanur Bali, from where you’ll embark on your next adventure – Nusa Penida island. Even though the boats run very frequently, we recommend buying tickets online in advance via bookaway.

Nusa Penida offers spectacular views. We definitely recommend a visit to the most famous Kelingking Beach, which is also referred to as T-Rex because the shape of the rocks resembles a Tyrannosaurus rex with its mouth open. Really famous are Diamond Beach or the treehouse, but we recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

If you are looking for the perfect place to live, we recommend Ari La Casa. It is close to the harbour and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. The owners were very nice and helpful, they also offer scooters for rent.

Ubud

After days spent on the coast, it wants a change. You will move from Nusa Penida to the very popular area Ubud. You’ll find everything here. Beautiful nature, waterfalls, rice fields, great local restaurants, but also nightlife.

The Alas Harum Bali complex is definitely worth a visit, where there are many tourist attractions and beautiful rice fields. You’ll only pay €3 to get in, but this also gets you into the Cretya Ubud club, which has great restaurant and three outdoor pools overlooking the rice paddies. There is also a DJ creating great atmosphere.

You can find more locations around Ubud as well as tips for restaurants and cafes in our e-book.

Our favourite area in Bali is the north and specifically the area around Munduk. You will find the most beautiful waterfalls here that are not crowded with hundreds of people. A little cooler weather can be expected in this area (around 20-25 degrees) and even during the dry season there may be some rainfall, as this is a high mountain area.

The three most beautiful waterfalls to visit here are definitely NungNung Waterfall, GitGit Waterfall and Sekumpul Waterfall.

Sekumpul Waterfall.

Canggu

How else to end your holiday in Bali than in the most famous Canggu? This is where you’ll find the best beach clubs, nightlife, a large number of fancy cafes, restaurants and boutiques.

There are also markets where you can buy beautiful souvenirs. We definitely recommend La Brisa Market, which is open every Sunday.

If you’re not in Canggu on a Sunday, an alternative is the Canggu Center Market, which is located just to the right of La Brisa and is open every day.

Among other things, you’ll also enjoy very tasty cuisine here, and the home-style Warungs (a sign for a family restaurant or business) will serve you great Mie Goreng (noodles with chicken and vegetables) or Chicken Satay (chicken skewer with peanut sauce) for less than 3€.

However, it is also a place that you need to prepare for in advance. We bring you 10 things you should definitely know before your trip.

1. The ideal time to travel is April to November.

The peak season on Bali, mainly due to the dry season, is from April to November. We went to Bali in March and it had its advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage, for example, was that there weren’t that many people on the island yet. We were also able to observe beautiful massive waterfalls thanks to the rainy season.

However, many times we had to face rainy weather. It rarely rained all day, but even a sunny day often turned into a huge downpour, which spoiled our plans. This is something to consider and if you want to enjoy sunny weather throughout your holiday, come during the dry season.

2. If you are planning a trip in March, watch out for the Day of Silence

If you are planning your trip to Bali in March, beware of the so-called Day of Silence, referred to as Nyepi Day. Each year it falls on a different day (in 2024 it was March 11). Exceptionally, it may also be in April.

Nyepi is a public holiday that is a day of silence, meditation and fasting for the people of Bali. During this day, it is forbidden to go out on the street, ride a car or motorcycle, even to have the lights on. All shops and restaurants are closed and international airport operations are also restricted.

Lempuyang Temple.

3. You do not need any vaccinations to visit Bali

Officially there is no compulsory vaccination to enter the island of Bali. In general, however, it is of course important to take into account your own state of health and to consult it with your doctor.

We were renewing our tetanus vaccinations before our trip. Many people also get vaccinated against typhoid, rabies or hepatitis before travelling to Asia.

4. You can also get your visa on arrival at the airport

You must apply for a tourist visa before entering Indonesia. The visa fee is 30€ per person and you can apply in two ways. The ideal way to do this is online before you arrive in Bali.

However, if you forget about it, you can still sort it out after you arrive at the airport. These visas are only valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, you can apply for an extension for an additional 30 days (online or in person at immigration centres).

I’m sure you’ve heard of the term Bali Belly. These are stomach problems that torture large number of tourists. The reasons may be different, but very often it is mainly due to the consumption of unfiltered water, fresh vegetables or drinks with ice.

It is important to remember that our bodies are used to different standards of hygiene and therefore we need to be very careful in some Asian countries. We therefore recommend brushing your teeth exclusively with bottled water from the store.

6. Be prepared for crazy traffic!

The island of Bali is characterised by crazy traffic throughout the day. Many times it even happens that going from point A to point B, which are less than 20 km apart, will take more than an hour.

In general, however, you can get everywhere on a motorbike faster then be a car. However, you should always wear a helmet because you never know what might happen during your ride.

Even if you consider yourself an experienced and responsible driver, in Indonesia you may be surprised by a dog, a chicken or a cat in the middle of the road, a huge pothole or a child on a motorbike. Not a step without a helmet!

For boat trips we recommend the Bookaway!

If you decide to explore the surrounding islands such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, or the Gili Islands, you will probably be moving by boat. Boats to these islands run several times a day and usually depart from Sanur Bali port or Padang Bay port.

The ideal way to book your tickets is online through Bookaway platform. There you’ll find all the time schedules and companies that run, so you simply pick a time and day that suits you and hooray for your next adventure.

When looking at restaurant menus, you should take into account the fact that almost everywhere the prices are quoted without tax. So when you pay, it is more than likely that they will add 10% to the price of your meal.

In many places, you may even have an additional 5% service charge added to your bill. So it’s up to you whether you decide to leave an additional tip.

You will have only 2 minutes to take a photo at the viewpoints or temples

As Bali is visited by thousands of tourists every month, the main spots are packed with crowds of people from early in the morning. At a temple like Lempuyang, for example, you’ll wait 2 hours for them to call your number and you’ll have exactly 3 poses – then the next one goes.

You need to prepare in advance and consider whether visiting such tourist spots is worth it for you. There are still less crowded places in Bali that you can enjoy to the fullest. However, if you decide to go to the most famous spots, we definitely recommend going early in the morning or before sunset.

You will pay an entrance fee for the beaches or waterfalls

Another typical feature of the island of Bali are the fees for visiting the beaches or waterfalls. In most cases, however, these are symbolic amounts of 1-3€. It’s quite nicely maintained in a lot of places, and there are toilets, showers, restaurants and shops, so those fees are natural.

However, there are also places where the fees are fanciful and extremely high. At Handara Gate, for example, you will pay 12€ for flying with a drone (limited to 2 min.). At Sekumpul waterfall you will have to pay 15€ per person for a guide, which you don’t really need.

We therefore recommend that you always do your research about the destinations in advance and consider which places to visit and which not to visit. You can read more about it in our e-book.

Our answer is definitely no!

The island of Nusa Penida has a lot to offer. Whether we are talking about beautiful beaches, breathtaking views or beautiful nature. Among other things, you’ll find a large number of great restaurants offering traditional Balinese cuisine, but also international specialities.

The ideal time spent on this island is therefore 2 or 3 nights. It also depends on what type of traveller you are. If you like relaxation and want to visit max 1-2 places per day, we definitely recommend at least 3 nights. If you don’t mind a busy schedule and frequent transfers, 2 nights will be the perfect choice for you.

How to get to Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida Island is located on the southeast coast of Bali and can be reached in 30-45 minutes by boat. The boat departs several times a day and the fastest connection is from the port of Sanur Bali. We recommend to buy tickets online in advance at bookaway.com. You’ll find offers from all the companies, so just pick a time and date that suits you and off you go on your next adventure.

Despite the fact that you can get from one side of the island to the other in 1 hour if the traffic is good, there are several areas to live.

Toya Pakeh harbour area

During our stay on Nusa Penida, we stayed just 300 metres from Toya Pakeh harbour. The great advantage of this area was that we could get from the port to our accommodation very quickly and easily without a taxi.

Another advantage was the many restaurants, shops and cafes that were located there. It was the perfect starting point for us to explore this beautiful island. We stayed at Ari La Casa and paid 15€ per night for two (without breakfast). The accommodation was modest, but it was clean, had air-conditioning and the sweetest owner! We also rented a scooter from him, so we highly recommend it.

Ped area

Located just a few minutes by scooter from the marina. It stretches along the coast, so you’ll find plenty of beach bars and restaurants with a view.

Sampalan & Batununggul area

Sampalan is one of the largest towns on the island, which is the main point for all ferry boats coming to Nusa Penida. Overall, the Sampalan and Batununggul area has many accommodation options as well as restaurants and bars for tourists. It is an ideal place for couples, but also for families with children.

Crystal Bay

If you want to visit the most beautiful spots on the island and you don’t want to move around too much, the Crystal Bay area might be the perfect place for you. This is because it is really close to the most famous place Kelingking Beach. From here you can also enjoy beautiful sunsets.

4 things you should know before arriving in Nusa Penida:

When entering Nusa Penida you will pay an entrance fee of 1,5€ per person. So you need to have cash ready.

Prepare for roads in bad condition and heavy traffic! The roads on the island are very narrow and as there are countless cars and minibuses driving there every day, getting from point A to point B is very tiring and lengthy, even though it is a relatively small island. If you want to avoid this, we definitely recommend visiting the most famous spots early in the morning or then just before sunset.

If you want to experience a real adventure and adrenaline rush, we definitely recommend climbing down to the most famous beaches such as Kelingking Beach or Diamond Beach. Sandals and flip-flops are definitely not the right choice, so it is advisable to bring sports shoes.

There is no Uber, Grab or Gojek on the island. However, you can book a local taxi, of which there are plenty. Many people book a driver to take them to the most beautiful places throughout the day. We rented a scooter for 5€ per day and explored the island on our own. For us, definitely the best alternative.

Many other useful and necessary information you need to know can be found in our e-book.

Well, let’s go to the most beautiful things this island has to offer. We bring you the TOP 8 most beautiful places you must see.

Kelingking Beach – T-Rex

Definitely the most beautiful and most famous place on the whole island is Kelingking Beach, also known as T-Rex. There is no entrance fee for this place, you only pay 0,3€ for parking when you arrive.

The views that this place offers are truly indescribably beautiful! It’s also called a T-Rex because the giant rock resembles a Tyrannosaurus rex with its mouth open.

In addition to the magnificent view, there is also a beach, but it is quite hard to get there. In order to enjoy the almost empty beach you will have to climb over a few steps and rocks. The trip down takes approximately 35-45 minutes (depending on fitness).

However, you need to be very careful as the trail is quite steep and slippery. So we definitely recommend bringing appropriate footwear, which as always we didn’t have. However, after a few meters we found out that it was really hard to walk in sandals and flip-flops, so we took off our shoes If you forget to wear appropriate footwear, it’s not undoable, but we recommend going barefoot.

There is also a small shop on the beach, which of course has extremely high surcharges and you will pay 5€ for a bottle of water there However, those who bring their own water will be willing to pay anything after the hike.

The sea on the beach is very rough, so be prepared for very strong currents and huge waves. But it was a lot of fun. The way up, however, is really hard – it was one of the biggest challenges during our travels.

The ideal time to visit Kelingking Beach is early in the morning (before 9:00) or then before sunset. We arrived at 4:30pm and that’s when we went down to the beach and it was a real treat.

Diamond Beach

Another beautiful and very famous beach on the island is Diamond Beach. Again, we recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the extremely full roads, which are not in the best shape.

Entrance to Diamond Beach is 2€ per person + 0,3€ for parking. However, you also get a bottle of water with the entrance fee. There is much better terrain leading to the beach than the previous Kelingking Beach and the hike is also shorter.

You can get down to the beach in about 15-20 min. Again, we recommend bringing suitable sports shoes to help you tackle the last part of the route much easier. There is also a small buffet on the beach where you can buy a drink and a snack.

Tree house “Rumah Pohon”

Another popular spot on the island is the tree house. When we saw photos and videos from there on social media, we thought it was just another fancy place that is absolutely not worth visiting. We even read on the internet that if you go there during the day, you have to wait in line for more than an hour. When you finally get to your turn, you are limited to 3 minutes to take pictures and enjoy this famous house. Crazy, right?

A view like from a fairy tale.

So we decided to visit this place at sunrise. So we got up in the morning and arrived a little after 6:00 am. We were there first! This place was truly magical and actually looks like something out of a fairy tale.

You will pay 1,5€ per person + 0,3€ for parking. However, if you want to take a photo or video with the house, you will pay an additional 4,5€. It may happen that if there are two of you they will ask you for 2 x 4,5€, which is really a bit too much for us. We very nicely explained to them that whether there was 1 person or two in the photo it is the same and so we only paid once.

Thousand Island Viewpoint

Just a few metres from the treehouse (about a 1 minute walk) is a beautiful viewpoint called Thousand Island Viewpoint. It offers really beautiful views of the cliffs and rocks and also the famous Diamond Beach. There is no entrance fee.

This view is located just a few meters behind the well-known Tree house.

Teletubbies Hill

A lesser known spot on the island that is not visited by hundreds of tourists a day is Teletubbies Hill. It is called so mainly because of the rounded hills, which are reminiscent of the hills from the children’s TV show Teletubbies. There is no entrance fee at this place – not even for parking.

We didn't meet any tourists at this place.

Broken Beach

Broken Beach gets its name because of a specific arch that creates a beautiful lagoon with turquoise water under the arch. It is located on the southwestern edge of Nusa Penida. However, the beach itself is not open to tourists, so you can only enjoy the views from above.

You can get there in 5 minutes from the car park. To get to the parking lot, however, you will have to walk down a very unpleasant rocky road, so if you are on a scooter you need to be very careful. There is no entrance fee, you will pay 0,3€ for parking. There is also a large number of restaurants and shops nearby.

However, through this arch in the rock you can reach the beach by boat.

Manta Bay a Manta Point

A very popular activity that many people travel to this island for is snorkelling with the Manta Rays. On the island you will find a large number of companies that offer this kind of tour. Some go out to Manta Bay, others to Manta Point.

What is the difference between them? We asked our local owner directly about this at the accommodation. If you want to have a better chance of seeing manta rays you should definitely go to Manta Point. The chances are up to 90% (50% for Manta Bay).

Another difference is the overall condition for snorkelling. Manta Bay is located just 20 minutes from Toya Pakeh Harbour, around Broken Beach and Angel Billabong. The water there is relatively shallow, so the manta rays are very easy to see from the boat. However, you need to be prepared for a huge number of boats and tourists. Manta Point is a little further away, about 45 minutes from Toya Pakeh harbour, but the chances of seeing manta rays are much higher. However, it is necessary to prepare for deeper and colder water, i.e. more difficult conditions for snorkelling. Full body neoprene is recommended. The best season for snorkelling is May to November.

The Chill Penida

A huge surprise for us was the restaurant The Chill Penida. As well as offering a great breakfast menu and coffee, there’s a bar, sun loungers and spectacular sea views. So it’s a great place to relax. We definitely recommend smoothie bowls for breakfast – you won’t regret it!

After a great breakfast you can chill by the pool.

Gastronomy on Nusa Penida

We tried quite a few restaurants on Nusa Penida. Since we stayed near the Toya Pakeh marina, our recommendations will be mainly related to restaurants in the area.

If you are looking for international cuisine such as burger or pizza, we recommend Happy Eating Penida. Sunny Cafe Penida has a very good selection of Mexican food and a great breakfast menu. Wyn’s Penida Café offers a great evening atmosphere with live music. We tried the tuna steak there and it was great. As we already mentioned, for breakfast or brunch we definitely recommend The Chill Penida, where you can easily spend a few hours.
