Although all Maldivian islands are located in one country, the reality is that local islands and resort islands offer completely different types of vacations. The differences are not only in the price, but also in the atmosphere, rules, culture, and how the entire stay goes.

If you are planning a vacation in the Maldives, it is good to be clear about these differences before booking. Otherwise, you may end up in a place that does not match your expectations at all. In this article, we will introduce you to the main differences between staying at a resort and staying on local islands. We will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of both alternatives so that you can get a comprehensive overview of which type of island is right for you.

Beaches and swimsuits rules in the Maldives: local islands vs. resorts

The first important aspect is the beaches, which are the main reason for visiting the Maldives. There are no restrictions on resort islands. The beaches are well-maintained and private, and you can wear your swimsuit anywhere and anytime.

Slightly different rules apply on local islands. Since these are inhabited islands where local residents live, there are designated bikini beaches and public beaches. Bikini beaches are designed for tourists, where you can swim, sunbathe, and walk around in your swimsuit without any problems. On other beaches, especially near houses, swimsuits are not worn. The good news is that most local islands have several bikini beaches, so it doesn’t feel restrictive at all.

When it comes to the beauty of the beaches themselves, the local islands are in no way inferior. White sand, turquoise water, sandbanks at low tide, and rich marine life are common even outside the resorts.

Culture and clothing in the Maldives

The Maldives are a Muslim country, and respect for local culture is key on the local islands. This means that if you are not on a bikini beach, you should wear appropriate clothing:

women should have their shoulders and knees covered,
men can wear shorts and a T-shirt,
Swimsuits belong exclusively on bikini beaches.

Transportation and opening hours may be limited on Fridays. Ramadan is also a special time, when some services operate on a limited basis, but the atmosphere is calmer and there are fewer tourists.

Food and dining in the Maldives: local island vs. resort

If you are coming to one of the resorts, you will probably pay for a significant portion of your meals when you make your reservation. Resorts usually operate on an all-inclusive or full-board basis, which is significantly reflected in the price of the stay. However, the advantage is convenience – everything is in one place, you don’t have to worry about anything, and in addition to buffet tables, resorts often include several themed restaurants and à la carte menus.

On the local islands, dining is much more flexible and cheaper. Most accommodations include breakfast in the price, and for the rest of the day, you can choose where and how much you want to eat. You will find local Maldivian dishes for €4-5, as well as international dishes such as pizza, pasta, and burgers. On more developed islands such as Dhiffushi, Dhigurah, or Fulhadhoo, you will also find more luxurious restaurants where you will find what you are looking for, even if you prefer better service.

Alcohol in the Maldives

One of the biggest differences between local and resort islands is alcohol. While there are almost no restrictions in resorts, alcohol is completely prohibited on all local islands. You can’t buy it in any store or restaurant.

PLEASE NOTE: It is important to know that you cannot bring alcohol into the country – airport checks are strict, even if you are going to a resort.

The atmosphere and overall experience of the Maldives

While resorts operate in a closed world based on the principle of one island = one resort, local islands offer much more. At the resort, you only meet staff and other guests, and everything seems smooth, quiet, and flawless.

The local islands offer a completely different type of experience. You are part of everyday life, you hear the call from the mosque, you meet local residents, you see children playing in the streets, and you discover small shops and cafés. If you enjoy discovering culture and authentic places, you will most likely love the local islands.

Disadvantages of local islands in the Maldives: what to expect

To make the picture realistic, the downsides should also be mentioned. There are a few things associated with local islands that you should also be prepared for before traveling:

Beach maintenance – the beaches are beautiful, but after storms, seaweed or washed-up debris may appear, which is not removed immediately as it is in resorts.
Mosquitoes and insects – there are more of them on local islands and they are active even during the day. However, a local repellent usually solves the problem.
Waste – some islands burn waste in designated areas, which can affect comfort in certain wind conditions.

How much does the Maldives cost: comparing prices for a local island and a resort

But let’s move on to the main advantage of local islands, which usually convinces many travelers. Resort vacations are usually fixed packages—accommodation, meals, transportation, and activities are predetermined, and the price can quickly add up. Trips, diving, and transportation (seaplane or private speedboat) are also significantly more expensive.

You have much more control over your budget on local islands. Whether we’re talking about accommodation, where you can pay €50 per night for two people, or €250 if you’re into luxury. The combination of local restaurants and more luxurious restaurants provides flexibility in choice according to taste and budget, and the various transport options are also an advantage. While resort islands are usually reached by private speedboat or seaplane, local islands can also be reached by local ferry for USD 1.

It is precisely this flexibility that is the reason why local islands are becoming increasingly popular with travelers.

There is no right or wrong choice. It just depends on what you expect from your vacation. If you want comfort, privacy, and have an unlimited budget, then a resort is the right choice for you. If you are looking for a local island in the Maldives that is easily accessible, has beautiful beaches, sandbanks, and plenty of excursion options, Dhiffushi is a very strong candidate. It is located in the Kaafu (North Malé) Atoll, just a short distance from the capital, making it one of the most popular local islands among travelers.

Even though it is more developed for tourism, you can still feel the local life here, where you can enjoy colorful streets, small cafes, and a pleasant atmosphere that makes it a great place for your first contact with the local Maldives.

Where is Dhiffushi Island located and how to get there

The main reason for Dhiffushi Island’s popularity is its location. It is located only about 30 kilometers from Malé, which means a short and easy transfer without the need for a domestic flight or seaplane. The island is ideal especially for first-time visitors to the Maldives, or for those traveling on a lower budget who don’t want to spend the whole day traveling between islands.

The most common way to get to Dhiffushi Island is by speedboat, which runs several times a day and takes approximately 30-45 minutes. This is the most comfortable and most widely used transport option. A cheaper alternative is the local ferry, which is significantly slower and takes approximately three hours. However, ferries do not run every day and have a fixed schedule, so it is necessary to plan your trip in advance.

Where to stay in Dhiffushi: overview of accommodation and prices

Accommodation on Dhiffushi Island is very diverse and covers a wide range of budgets. You will find simple guesthouses, family hotels, and more modern boutique accommodations with higher standards. Prices range from around €50 per night for two people, but more expensive options are also available for those seeking greater comfort. Since the island is small, distances are minimal and you can reach every beach on foot within a few minutes.

We stayed at Araamu Hotels for €65 per night for two people, including breakfast, which was a great price for what we got. The rooms were really spacious and modernly furnished, we also had a small terrace, and a buffet breakfast was included in the price. The hotel’s location was also good, as it was only about a 2-minute walk to the beach.

The most beautiful beaches on Dhiffushi and what to expect from them

The same rules apply on Dhiffushi Island as on other local islands in the Maldives. Swimming and exercising in swimwear is permitted exclusively on bikini beaches. You can find more information about the rules and differences between resort and local islands at this link.

There are two bikini beaches on Dhiffushi Island – north and south. The North Beach is the largest and most famous, with white sand and turquoise water, ending with an iconic sandbank.

The southern beach is a little smaller, but richer in marine life. You can also rent sunbeds for a fee, and there are restaurants and cafés nearby, so you can easily spend the whole day here.

Dhiffushi activities – boat trips, snorkeling, sandbank

Dhiffushi is an excellent starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. Local agencies offer snorkeling trips, dolphin watching, sandbanks, fishing, and full-day trips to resort islands. The prices of trips are significantly lower than those offered by resorts, and you can plan them flexibly according to the length of your stay and the weather.

Another great activity on Dhiffushi Island is diving. The island is located in North Malé Atoll, one of the best diving areas in the Maldives. You can see various species of fish, turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, and even manta rays during certain seasons. This type of activity is also suitable for beginners, as the water is calm. Prices range from $70 to $90 per dive. Various diving packages or entire courses are usually also available.

Where to eat in Dhiffushi: restaurants, local food, prices

There are many food on Dhiffushi and it is very affordable. Most accommodations offer breakfast in the form of a buffet or a served menu (with the option of paying extra for full board or half board). There are several restaurants on the island where you can enjoy traditional Maldivian dishes, as well as international cuisine such as pizza, pasta, burgers, and seafood. Prices in local restaurants are significantly lower than in resorts, and you will pay an average of USD 6-7 for a main course.

If you are looking for a local restaurant, we recommend Downtown Bar, where every day after 3:30 p.m. they serve a typical Maldivian snack called Hedhikaa, consisting of various fried fish specialties.

The island also features the Dhiffushi Inn beach club, which offers direct access to the northern bikini beach. There is a great atmosphere, beautiful premises, and a superb selection of food, coffee, and drinks.

Which island to combine with Dhiffushi island

If you are coming to the Maldives with the intention of staying in one place the entire time, you can easily spend a whole week on Dhiffushi Island. However, if you want to combine several islands, the ideal time to spend on Dhiffushi Island is 4-5 days. As it is a smaller island, this will be more than enough time for you to combine relaxation with the best activities the island has to offer.

As Dhiffushi Island is located only 40 minutes by boat from Malé, which is the starting point for all transport to the islands, Dhiffushi can be combined with virtually any island in the Maldives. Thulusdhoo

If you don’t want to return to Malé and spend too much time traveling by boat, a great alternative is the nearby island of Thulusdhoo, which offers a completely different experience compared to Dhiffushi Island. Dhiffushi is a peaceful island where you will find iconic beaches with sandbanks, turquoise lagoons, and a great opportunity to relax. Thulusdhoo, on the other hand, is a very energetic island, the sea is rough, the waves are bigger and more suitable for surfing and other water sports. You will find affordable hotels and restaurants here.

Even though it is mainly a surfing island, that doesn’t mean you can’t visit it if you don’t surf. There are still beautiful bikini beaches here, and since the main surfing season is from May onwards, it is not so crowded here during the main Maldivian season. You can also go on trips around the island, so you definitely won’t be bored.

Maalhos is a tiny local island located in Baa Atoll, one of the most beautiful and rarest areas of the Maldives. This atoll is known for its rich biodiversity and exceptional underwater world. Maalhos is located approximately 130 kilometers from the capital city of Malé and, compared to other local islands, is significantly smaller and quieter. If you are not looking for busy streets, large hotels, and tourist chaos, but rather tranquility, romance, and an authentic atmosphere, Maalhos may be just the place for you.

Despite its size, you will find here everything you need for a relaxing stay here. There are smaller guest-houses, local restaurants, and above all, beautiful nature, which plays a major role on this island. Maalhos is ideal for travelers who want to slow down, unwind, and experience the Maldives in its natural state, far from the crowds.

How to get to Maalhos Island in the Maldives

There are several ways to get to Maalhos Island, with the most common option being a speedboat from Malé. The trip takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours and is the easiest way to get directly to the island. Schedules are subject to change, so it is always a good idea to check the current times directly with your accommodation. They usually leave Malé between 12:00 and 1 p.m..

Another option is a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo Island, which takes approximately 40 minutes. From there, you continue with a short boat ride on a local boat directly to Maalhos. This transport is faster, but more expensive. Maalhos can also be easily combined with Fulhadhoo Island using local boats, which are affordable and surprisingly comfortable. Maalhos: basic information and what to expect

Maalhos is an island that you can walk across in a few minutes. There is an ATM, small local shops, and a simple health center providing basic care. Card payments are only possible in some places, so it is worth carrying cash with you. The island does not seem touristy, and that is precisely what makes it so charming. Local life can be felt at every turn, and the atmosphere is very peaceful and pleasant.

Accommodation on Maalhos Island: hotels and guest-houses

Accommodation on Maalhos is more modest compared to larger local islands, but the quality of guest-houses is very good. You won’t find any luxury resorts or large hotels here, which only serves to underline the authentic character of the island. Most accommodations are smaller family-run establishments where the owners personally take care of guests and help with everything they need.

One very popular option is Madi Beach Guest House, located just a few steps from the beach. Although this is simpler accommodation, the rooms are clean and spacious. It is precisely this type of accommodation that makes a stay at Maalhos exceptional and different from classic holiday destinations.

Beaches on Maalhos Island: the most beautiful places

There is only one official bikini beach on Maalhos Island, located on the north to northwest side of the island. This is where tourists can swim and sunbathe in their swimsuits. The beach is smaller, but exceptionally beautiful. White sand, turquoise water, and a peaceful atmosphere create exactly the image of the Maldives that most people have in their minds. Of all the local islands, we experienced the most colorful underwater world here, which was just a few meters from the shore. No trips were even necessary for this.

Bikini Beach.

In addition to the bikini beach, the island also has other beaches that are more suitable for walking, taking photos, and observing local life. Thanks to the low number of tourists, you often feel like you are almost alone on the island, even during the high season.

Hanifaru Bay and Manta Rays – the largest concentration of manta rays in the Maldives

One of the main reasons why people decide to visit Maalhos Island is its proximity to the world-famous Hanifaru Bay. This protected sea bay is one of the best places in the world to observe manta rays. During the southwest monsoon, large amounts of plankton gather here, attracting hundreds of manta rays and occasionally even whale sharks.

The trip to Hanifaru Bay takes about 15 minutes by boat from Maalhos and is one of the most powerful experiences the Maldives has to offer. Access to the bay is strictly regulated, ensuring nature conservation and an authentic experience without mass tourism. The main season for observation is from May to November.

Excursions and activities on Maalhos Island: What to do and see

In addition to visiting Hanifaru Bay, Maalhos also offers other excursions that are well worth taking. If you get tired of snorkeling close to the island, you can set out to explore the surrounding area. Trips to sandbanks are particularly popular, where you can enjoy complete privacy in the middle of a turquoise lagoon. Full-day trips to nearby islands combined with picnics, snorkeling, or relaxing on deserted beaches are also popular.

Lovers of the underwater world will appreciate snorkeling trips with several stops, during which you can see corals, tropical fish, turtles, and manta rays. Traditional fishing at sunset or night fishing is another activity that offers an authentic glimpse into the local way of life. An interesting addition to your stay is dolphin watching on the open sea.

Restaurants and cafes on Maalhos Island

The cuisine on Maalhos Island is simpler, but pleasantly surprising in its quality. You won’t find many restaurants here, but those that are here offer tasty and fresh food. The Dhonfulhafi Restaurant right on the beach is very popular. At first glance, it does not seem great, but the food here is truly excellent.

Moonshell Restaurant offers a slightly more modern atmosphere with a rooftop terrace, while Vaataru Café is a classic local restaurant near the harbor. If you are a lover of good coffee, it is definitely worth visiting Cafe Pink Rose, which is a popular place not only among tourists but also among locals. Every day from 3:30 p.m., they also serve typical Maldivian snacks called Hedhikaa for a few cents, which you definitely have to try.

Until recently, the Maldives were known almost exclusively for their luxury resorts, but today more and more travelers are choosing local islands for their vacations. They offer lower prices, a more authentic view of life in the Maldives, and often just as beautiful beaches, lagoons, and snorkeling as the resort islands.

However, choosing the “right” island is not entirely easy. Every atoll and every island is different — some are ideal for snorkeling, others for peaceful relaxation, others have better infrastructure, more restaurants, or easier transportation from the airport. We visited several local islands in the Maldives, and Fulhadhoo Island is definitely one of our favorites. Why? We will discuss this in the next section of the article.

Fulhadhoo Island

Fulhadhoo is located in Baa Atoll, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions of the Maldives. It is a local island that has gained popularity among travelers mainly thanks to its extremely long beaches, fine white sand, and turquoise water, which you would rather expect to find in luxury resorts.

Among the local islands, Fulhadhoo is an ideal compromise. It is not overcrowded with tourists, but at the same time it does not feel deserted. The island has a pleasant center with restaurants, cafes, and small shops, and overall a very relaxed “slow” vibe. That is why it is one of our favorite local islands in the Maldives.

How to get to Fulhadhoo Island

There are several ways to get to the island, and the choice depends mainly on your budget and time constraints. The most common choice for travelers is a speedboat from Malé, which will take you to the island in about 2.5 hours. The advantage is that it runs directly from Malé International Airport, so you don’t have to travel anywhere after your arrival. An alternative is a domestic flight to the nearby island of Dharavandhoo Island in the Baa Atoll, followed by a boat transfer.

There is also the option of a private seaplane, but this is a significantly more expensive option, which most travelers do not use for practical and financial reasons. We discuss exact times, prices, and combinations of transfers in detail in our e-book.

Amenities in Fulhadhoo

Fulhadhoo is well organized and very easy to navigate. Most accommodations, restaurants, and services are located in one part of the island, so the location of the hotel is practically irrelevant. The island is small, so you will mostly get around on foot. Card payments only work in certain places, so you will definitely need cash. If you don’t have time to withdraw cash at the airport, there is also an ATM on Fulhadhoo Island.

There is also a small health center on the island, which only provides first aid and treats minor health problems. More serious cases are dealt with by transferring to Male. However, this is how it works on almost all local islands in the Maldives.

Where to stay in Fulhadhoo

The range of accommodation on Fulhadhoo is surprisingly varied. You will find there simple guesthouses as well as more elegant boutique hotels, making the island suitable for low-budget travelers, but also for those who want to enjoy greater comfort.

The price range is wide (from €50 per night to €250 per night) and the differences are mainly in design, services, and location relative to the beach. We stayed at the Island Luxury Dive Hotel on Fulhadhoo Island, where we paid €102 per night for two people, including breakfast. The location of the hotel was a big advantage, as we were on the very edge of the inhabited part of the island, so we were really close to the bikini beach compared among the other islands.

Beaches on Fulhadhoo

Fulhadhoo is known for having one of the longest beaches among the local islands. The beaches are spacious, so even during peak season they don’t feel crowded.

The main bikini beach is located on the west and southwest side of the island and stretches for more than one kilometer. At low tide, a large sandbank forms at its end, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the Maldives – mainly thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and orientation towards the sunset. This is where we ended each day. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the sandbank from the village, and if you go during the day, we recommend taking plenty of water, something to cover your head, and sunscreen. At the end, you won’t find any restaurants or shops.

In addition to this, the island also has several public beaches, which are mainly used by local residents. They are ideal for walking, observing local life, or taking photos, but the dress code typical for local islands applies here. Snorkeling and excursions on Fulhadhoo

You won’t find the richest coral reefs right off the shore of Fulhadhoo, so snorkeling from the beach is rather average. However, the island’s location is an advantage. There are great places for trips in its vicinity.

You can choose from various trips organized from Fulhadhoo:

trips to see manta rays, dolphins, or nurse sharks
visits to sandbanks and coral reefs
trips to nearby uninhabited islands

There are several companies on the island that organize these trips, and reservations can also be made directly through the hotel (often with card payment available). From our own experience, we can recommend Flow Ventures Fulhadhoo, which offers a great selection of trips and excellent guides, ensuring a great atmosphere on board during the trip. As a bonus, they will take photos and videos for you to keep as souvenirs.

Food and restaurants in Fulhadhoo

The gastronomic offer on Fulhadhoo is truly diverse. You will find local restaurants, modern cafés, and establishments serving international cuisine. The island offers everything from simple Maldivian dishes to brunch, Thai cuisine, and high-quality coffee.

The Dune Café is definitely worth mentioning, where, in addition to local specialties and fresh fish, you will also find a great selection of breakfasts and specialty coffees. We also recommend trying their homemade lemonade. If you are looking for something local, we recommend visiting Blue Café, where they serve local snacks in the form of fish specialties and toast during the day, and they also prepare very tasty and inexpensive coffee. In our opinion, the best restaurant on the island is Naya Cafe, which offers a great selection of food at great prices.

Who is Fulhadhoo Island ideal for?

We recommend Fulhadhoo especially to travelers who are looking for beautiful beaches without crowds and prefer a quieter island with a wide range of excursions focused on the underwater world. It is also suitable for people who want to spend about 5-7 days in one place and want to combine relaxation with activities.

As a contrast to Fulhadhoo, the quieter island of Maalhos in the same atoll is a great fit, and you can add it to your itinerary without any long transfers.

Koh Chang: How to get there, what to see, and where to stay – the best beaches, hotels, and restaurants

Koh Chang is Thailand’s third largest island, located near the Cambodian border in Trat Province, about 300 km southeast of Bangkok. Despite being one of Thailand’s largest islands, along with the well-known Phuket and Koh Samui, it still retains its tranquility and authenticity.

The inland is covered in dense rainforest, creating a beautiful contrast with the azure blue water. The whole island has a very relaxed atmosphere and, despite the fact that there are already many hotels, restaurants, and bars, it can still be considered a relatively less touristy island where you can forget about crowded beaches and heavy traffic. This island is therefore the ideal compromise between adventure and relaxation, whether you are traveling with a backpack or looking for a romantic getaway in nature.

How to get to Koh Chang?

We recommend traveling to Koh Chang from Bangkok. You have two options to choose from. You can either fly from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Trat Airport. The entire flight will take approximately 60 minutes. From there, you will need to take a ferry departing from Ao Thammachat Pier or Center Point Pier. The ferry ride to Koh Chang takes about 30-45 minutes. Ferries run several times a day.

The second option for getting to Koh Chang is to take a bus to the aforementioned port, from where you can transfer to a ferry. The ride by minibus or bus from Bangkok takes approximately 6 hours. We booked our tickets on this link.

When to visit Koh Chang

The best time to visit Koh Chang is during the dry season, which lasts from November to April. During these months, the weather is sunny, the sea is calm, and the water is crystal clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. However, most people travel to Thailand in December and January, so if you want to avoid the crowds, November or April may be the ideal time for you. However, as we have already mentioned, Koh Chang Island is not overcrowded with tourists, so you can enjoy it to the fullest even during the peak season.

Where to stay on Koh Chang

On Koh Chang Island, you will find various types of accommodation, from the most luxurious resorts to cheap hostels. However, the location may be decisive for you, depending on what you are looking for. From our own experience, we can recommend the Kai Bae Beach area, which is ideal for both families with children and couples. Here you will find a beautiful beach, excellent amenities, many restaurants, and hotels at various price levels. If you are looking for luxury, we recommend The Chill Resort and Spa, which has a great location, beautiful facilities, and all-day breakfast! If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, then MAM Kaibae Hotel may be the right choice for you.

If you are traveling alone or looking for busier areas full of backpackers and digital nomads, we recommend the Lonely Beach area, which is known for its lively nightlife and bohemian atmosphere. If you like peace and quiet but still want to live in the center of the action, the Whitesand Beach area is a great alternative, where you will find many beautiful resorts.

The most beautiful beaches on Koh Chang Island

Koh Chang is known for its variety of beaches. You will find there busy beaches with bars and music, but also completely quiet coves where you will have no one around. Each has its own character and atmosphere, so there really is something for everyone, whether you are traveling as a couple, a group of friends, or looking for peace and quiet with a coconut in your hand. During our stay, we traveled almost the entire island from north to south, and here are the beaches that impressed us the most.

Whitesand Beach

Whitesand Beach is the most famous and developed beach on Koh Chang Island. It is a long beach with white sand and very calm and shallow water. There are many resorts, restaurants, and bars on the beach, so you can easily spend the whole day here. There are also ideal conditions for paddleboarding, and families with children will also enjoy themselves here, as there is relatively plenty of shade.

Kai Bae Beach

Kai Bae Beach is a popular tourist beach on the island. It has fine white sand and calm waters, so you can enjoy activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding. From the beach, you can see the surrounding tiny islands of Koh Man Nai, Koh Man Nok, and Koh Yuak, which you can reach by kayak to go snorkeling. It also offers picturesque views of the sunset. Above the beach is the Kai Bae Viewpoint, which can be reached by car or scooter.

Lonely Beach

Lonely Beach is located on the southwest coast and can be considered the liveliest beach on the island. It is particularly popular among solo travelers and backpackers, as there are many affordable accommodations (hostels) and great nightlife. There are several beach clubs and bars on the beach, where parties and fire shows are held regularly. The most famous bars are Ting Ting Bar and Nature Beach Resort.

Long Beach

On the southern side of the island, you will find a beautiful untouched beach called Long Beach. However, you will need to travel to this beach by motorbike or taxi, and the journey will take approximately 60-80 minutes. It is a less touristy beach, but in our opinion, it is one of the most beautiful on the island. However, there is not much in the surrounding area, only one beach restaurant. It is therefore a suitable place for those who prefer more secluded places without crowds of tourists. Ideally, visit it together with Ko Ngam Island, which we will talk about later.

Wai Chaek Beach

The absolute gem of Koh Chang and, in our opinion, the most beautiful beach is Wai Cheak Beach. This beach is located on the southern side of the island and offers an absolutely authentic experience. It is a beautiful beach in a remote location, lined with dozens of palm trees. There are no shops or restaurants in the area, so if you decide to come here for the whole day, we recommend bringing enough water and
own food. However, you will need your own scooter to get here, as taxis are unlikely to take you there. The last 10 minutes require climbing a steeper rocky path. You need to be very careful when riding, and if you don’t have enough experience riding a scooter, we definitely don’t recommend it.

What to do on Koh Chang Island

However, apart from beautiful beaches, Koh Chang has much more to offer. Whether it’s trips to the surrounding islands, diving and snorkeling in the lagoons, or exploring the inland, which also has a lot to offer.

Trip to Koh Ngam Island

A popular activity on Koh Chang is visiting the neighboring small island of Ko Ngam. The island is located 1.5 km southeast of Koh Chang and is part of Mu Ko Chang National Park. The island is surrounded on both sides by emerald green water and sandy beaches. You can reach this island by water taxi, kayak, or take a day trip that includes visits to Koh Lao Ya and Ko Wai in addition to this island.

We chose the second option and paid 100 THB for a two-way boat taxi from this location. However, you will pay an additional 200 THB per person to enter the island. There are no restaurants or shops on the island, so we recommend bringing your own food. There is a small local shop located right in the harbor where you can buy tickets for the boat, so if you haven’t brought your own food, you can buy some cold drinks or snacks there. The ideal time to spend on the island is 2-3 hours.

Full-day trip to Koh Ngam + Koh Lao Ya + Ko Wai

If a few hours on Koh Ngam Island aren’t enough for you, you can book a full-day trip and explore more. The islands of Koh Lao Ya and Ko Wai offer panoramic views, crystal clear water with colorful corals, and therefore excellent conditions for snorkeling. Such trips usually last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the price ranges from 700 to 1,000 THB per person, depending on the program. Boat trips depart from Bang Bao Pier or Kai Bae Beach, but also from the same place where boat depart for Koh Ngam.

Trip to Koh Mak Island

A popular activity is visiting the nearby island of Koh Mak. This island is known for its beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and, above all, its peaceful atmosphere, as it is much smaller and less crowded than Koh Chang. You can get to Koh Mak by ferry, which runs regularly several times a day from Bang Bao Port. You will pay €16 for the ticket. The journey will take approximately 45 minutes. You can also hire a private motorboat, which will take you there in 30 minutes. You can also take a one-day trip. Tickets can be purchased at local tourist centers. You can also visit Koh Mak for several days, as there are accommodations available on the island. You can view the entire range of accommodation on this page.

Waterfalls on Koh Chang Island

In addition to beautiful beaches, the island also offers beautiful nature and many waterfalls, which can be reached by easy hiking trails that anyone can manage. So if you want to take a break from the sun and swimming and hide from the hot day, visiting one of them can be a great activity for you.

The following are worth mentioning:

Klong Phu – located on the west coast, near Klong Prao Beach. It takes about 15 minutes to get there from the parking lot, and admission is 200 THB per person.
Than Mayom – a cascading waterfall surrounded by dense jungle, where you don’t pay any fees.
Khlong Nonsi – located on the east coast, it can be reached by a short walk through rubber plantations.

Gastronomy on Koh Chang Island

On Koh Chang, you will find many great restaurants, whether you are looking for Thai specialties or restaurants offering international alternatives. Our favorite Thai restaurants included Apple Kitchen, Happy Restaurant Kai Bae Beach, and the neighboring Enjoy Life Restaurant.

If you are looking for international alternatives, be sure to visit the Italian restaurant Little Italy, Poké Bowl Koh Chang, or the Mexican restaurant El Barrio. If you are looking for nightlife, the bars around Lonely Beach are worth mentioning, such as Tingtong Bar or Himmel Bar, Kai Bae Walking Street or Oodies Bar with live oldies music.

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, located in the south of the country in the Andaman Sea. It is known for its beautiful beaches, turquoise sea, rich nightlife, and excellent Thai cuisine. Every year, millions of travelers from around the world come here in search of the perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and tropical atmosphere.

How to get to Phuket?

An advantage of this island is Phuket International Airport (HKT), located in the northern part of the island. The airport handles many domestic flights daily (e.g., from Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Koh Samui), as well as international flights from Asia and Europe. So if you are flying from Budapest or Vienna, for example, you can get here very easily and directly by plane.

However, you can also get to Phuket from the surrounding islands such as Phi Phi Islands or Krabi, from where ferries and speedboats run regularly. They usually arrive at the port of Rassada. You can book boat transfers at this link.

Where to stay in Phuket

The choice of location in Phuket can completely change your overall impression of the island. Phuket is a large island with many completely different areas. There are bustling beaches full of bars and nightlife, but also quiet coves and luxury resorts surrounded by nature. That is why choosing the right location for your accommodation is very important, as each one offers a different holiday experience.

If you are looking for entertainment and a vibrant atmosphere, you will probably love Patong or Kata. If you long for peace, beautiful sunsets, and tranquility, areas such as Nai Thon, Bang Tao, and Kamala are ideal.

From our own experience, we recommend the areas around Kata Beach or Karon Beach. Why? It is a great strategic location from which you can discover the beauty of the entire island. There are great amenities, many restaurants, and night markets. This means that in the evening, you can leave your accommodation and head out onto the streets without having to take a taxi or travel for an hour on a scooter. However, it is still a much quieter area than, for example, Patong, where there are dozens of clubs and bars. For us, it is clearly the best choice among all the areas mentioned.

What to see in Phuket

Phuket is a very diverse island where you will find not only beautiful beaches, but also viewpoints, temples, cities, promenades, and, of course, a vibrant nightlife. Another strong point of the island is its excellent cuisine and night markets, where you can enjoy the best Thai specialties for just a few euros. In this article, we bring you our favorite places that we definitely recommend to include in your itinerary.

Haad Laem Sing

The first place is a beach that not everyone knows about. And that’s why you’ll enjoy beautiful moments just for yourself here. It is a hidden beach that most tourists only admire from the viewpoint along the road. This is mainly because access to the beach is a little more complicated. But it’s nothing that can’t be handled.

The second option is to take a water taxi from Surin Beach, which costs around 200 THB per person. There is one local restaurant on the beach and a few sun loungers that you can rent. For us, it is definitely the most beautiful beach in all of Phuket!

Nui Beach

A very specific beach is Nui Beach, located on the southwest coast. From Karon or Kata, you can get here by scooter in about 25 minutes. This beach is known for its stunning scenery and views, as it is located between rocks. It is a tiny beach that gives the impression of being private because there are not many people there. The main reason for this is that access to the beach is a little more complicated.

The road to the beach is not very well constructed, so we do not recommend traveling here on your own scooter unless you have sufficient experience. However, you can leave your scooter parked up there and travel here by taxi, which will cost you 200 THB for a round trip. Another option is to rent a quad bike or walk, which will take you about 30 minutes. Entrance to the beach costs 100 THB per person. There are restaurants and sun loungers on the beach, so you can easily spend the whole day here.

Phuket Old Town

During your visit to Phuket, you should definitely visit the old town, which is also known as the historic heart of Phuket. It is located inland, about a 40-minute drive from Patong and a 30-minute drive from the international airport. Tourists are particularly attracted by its beautiful combination of Chinese and Portuguese architecture, which is characterized by distinctive facades, wooden shutters, and colorful tiles on the houses. You will also find many colorful shops, temples, street art, and many small cafes and restaurants.

If you visit this place during the weekend, you can enjoy the weekend market. This is the largest street food market in Phuket, where you can taste many Thai specialties and buy beautiful handicrafts and souvenirs. While walking around the market, you will also come across lively street performances, which add to the great atmosphere. The best time to visit is between 6-7 p.m., when it has the best Thai atmosphere.

Bangla Road

Bangla Road, also known as Bangla Walking Street, is the main center of nightlife on the entire island. You will find a huge number of bars, clubs, and restaurants, loud music, and all kinds of street performers. All cars and motorcycles are prohibited from entering this street after 6 p.m., so you can only get here on foot.

The best time to visit is after 9 p.m., when you can enjoy the real atmosphere. The bars on this street are open until around 3 a.m. If you are traveling here from surrounding areas such as Kata Beach, Karon Beach, or Kamala Beach, we recommend arriving by taxi or tuk-tuk to avoid unnecessary complications with parking.

Karon Temple

If you are staying in the Karon or Kata Beach area, Karon Temple is also worth mentioning, where you can soak up the beauty of Thai culture. It is a beautiful Buddhist temple decorated with colorful mosaics and golden statues of Buddha. If you come here on Tuesday or Friday after 4 p.m., you can also enjoy the Karon Temple Night Market, which has a unique atmosphere.

Nai Thon Beach

Nai Thon Beach is located in the north of Phuket Island, just 15 minutes from the airport. So if you are staying in the Kata or Karon Beach area, you will need a car or scooter to get here. The journey will take approximately 60-80 minutes depending on traffic. It is a kilometer-long beach with fine golden sand, offering a relaxed atmosphere. On the far left side of the beach, there is also an iconic wooden staircase where you can take beautiful photos. Location here.

Bannana Beach

Banana Beach was declared the 2nd most beautiful beach in the world in 2025. It is located in the north of the island, just a 5-minute scooter ride from the aforementioned Nai Thon Beach. It is a tiny hidden cove shaped like a crescent moon. Park your scooter right by the road and in about 2 minutes you’ll be in paradise. You will enjoy undisturbed relaxation and an authentic atmosphere there. There is one local restaurant on the beach where you can buy cold drinks or snacks.

Freedom Beach

Freedom Beach is a great choice for those who live in busier areas such as Patong or Karon Beach, but are looking for a quieter atmosphere. This beach is located just 13 minutes from the famous Patong or Karon beaches. However, it is a much quieter beach with white sand and turquoise water. However, you will have to pay 100 THB per person to enter the beach. If you don’t have a car or scooter, you can easily get here by taxi or tuk-tuk.

Mai Khao Beach

If you want a unique experience, don’t miss Mai Khao Beach. From this beach, it is possible to watch planes landing at the nearby airport. From this perspective, you can take really beautiful photos. However, please be aware that flying drones is not permitted on the beach, as it is located in close proximity to the airport.

Karon Viewpoint

If you love sunsets, Phuket is the right place for you. Most beaches face west, so you can enjoy a truly unique atmosphere. However, if you are looking for something a little more special, Karon Viewpoint is worth mentioning, offering stunning panoramic views of the sea and surrounding beaches.

What to see around Phuket

One of Phuket’s greatest strengths is its excellent strategic location. If you are staying here for more than a week, we definitely recommend exploring the surrounding areas.

Trip to the Similan Islands

One of the most beautiful trips you can take from Phuket is definitely a full-day trip to the Similan Islands. These islands offer crystal clear waters and soft sand, and are often compared to the world-famous Seychelles. During the trip, you will also make several stops for snorkeling, and if you are lucky, you will also take home the experience of swimming with turtles. Samet Nangshe Viewpoint

Another beautiful place worth visiting from Phuket is the Samet Nangshe viewpoint. The viewpoint is located near the village of Ban Samet, about 30 km north of Phang Nga and approximately 1.5 hours by car from Phuket. Located on a hill 200 meters above sea level, it offers a beautiful panoramic view of Phang Nga Bay that will definitely take your breath away.

You can travel to the viewpoint directly from Phuket. However, you should be prepared for a journey of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Another option is to find accommodation in Phang Nga, which is only a 30-minute drive or motorbike ride away.

The third option is to stay at the Samet Nangshe Goodview Hotel or the Samenangshe Boutique, which are located right next to the viewpoint and offer equally beautiful views of the bay from the hotels themselves. However, these hotels are usually booked several months in advance and you should also be prepared for high prices.

Trip to Phang Nga Bay – James Bond Island

A beautiful place that we recommend visiting during your stay in Phuket is Phang Nga Bay. This bay is located 30 km northeast of Phuket (approximately 1-1.5 hours by car) and is known for its emerald green waters surrounded by limestone cliffs and beautiful nature.

Koh Yao Yai

If you are looking for an island to combine with your vacation in Phuket, but don’t want to travel too far, Koh Yao Yai is a great alternative. It is a tiny local island, only 30 minutes by boat from the famous Phuket. You won’t find crowds of people, nightlife, or many luxury restaurants here. Cuisine in Phuket

Phuket has dozens of highly rated restaurants and cafés. In addition to local specialties, you will also find international restaurants and establishments offering vegan cuisine. Just open Google and look at the reviews, we guarantee that it will be difficult to choose from such a wide range of restaurants. However, we have been to Phuket several times and have our favorite places that we definitely recommend you visit.

Number 6 – Patong

Our first recommendation is Number 6 in Patong. This is a local restaurant where you will probably have to wait in line for a table. You will then be seated at a table with other people and given a menu featuring local specialties. Even though demand for this restaurant is really high, prices remain low.

One Chun Cafe & Restaurant

If you want to try Pad Thai recommended by the Michelin Guide, you must visit One Chun Restaurant. This restaurant is located in Phuket’s old town. Pad Thai costs around €4 here, but it tastes really great!

Kata Night Market

If you are staying near Kata Beach or Karon Beach, Kata Walking Street is a must-see. This market is open every day from 4 p.m. You can enjoy great street food here for just a few euros.

Soul Vegan

If you are vegan or looking for a place to have breakfast, brunch, or great coffee, we recommend visiting Soul Vegan. The restaurant is located just a few minutes from the famous Karon Beach, and in addition to its excellent food and drink offerings, you will also be enchanted by its beautiful surroundings.

We would divide Phuket’s beaches into three categories:

City beaches with a lively atmosphere and plenty of activities
Beaches with the perfect balance – neither too busy nor too quiet
Hidden coves without crowds of tourists

City beaches with a lively atmosphere

Patong Beach

Phuket’s city beaches are buzzing with energy from morning till night. You will find here bustling promenades, numerous bars, restaurants, and water activities. They are the ideal choice for those seeking a combination of sun, fun, and social life right on the beach. Among these beaches is Patong Beach, which is undoubtedly the wildest beach in all of Phuket. It is an ideal choice for young people who appreciate beach bars, music, and a variety of water sports and adrenaline-fueled activities. If you are coming to Phuket for rest and relaxation, we recommend skipping this beach.

Kata Beach & Karon Beach

Even though these beaches are a little quieter than Patong Beach, you will still find plenty of activities, restaurants, and bars here. As many tourists live in this area, these beaches tend to be very crowded during the day, and you will also find a large number of sun loungers that take up a large part of the beach.

All three of the mentioned beaches are, in our opinion, very average in terms of the cleanliness of the beach, water, and surroundings, so we definitely recommend exploring other places. However, city beaches can be the perfect place to watch the sunset, when the atmosphere is truly wonderful.

Beaches with the perfect balance – neither too busy nor too quiet

If you are looking for a place that combines peace and quiet with easy access to amenities, and you want to avoid crowded resorts, these beaches are the ideal choice for you. They offer beautiful nature, clean sea, but also plenty of restaurants and bars to relax throughout the day.

Freedom Beach

This category includes, for example, the beautiful Freedom Beach, located just 13 minutes from the famous Patong or Karon beaches. However, it is a much quieter beach with white sand and turquoise water. However, you will have to pay 100 THB per person to enter the beach.

Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach is a quiet, family-friendly beach with a pleasant atmosphere, ideal for those seeking peace and quiet but who don’t want to be completely isolated from the outside world. In the surrounding area, you will find cozy cafes, massage saloons, and local markets.

Surin Beach

Surin Beach is often referred to as the millionaires’ beach, as there are many beautiful luxury resorts in the surrounding area. The sea here is calm and clean, providing ideal conditions for swimming. We especially liked the right side of the beach, which felt very natural and authentic, as there were no sun loungers all over the beach and there was also a beautiful view of the sunset.

Nai Thon Beach

Hidden coves without crowds of tourists

If you love secluded beaches that you want to have all to yourself, we have alternatives for you! Many people don’t know this, but Phuket also offers hidden beaches where you can completely forget about the crowds of tourists and beaches crowded with sun loungers.

Bannana Beach

One of them is definitely Banana Beach, which was named the second most beautiful beach in the world in 2025. It is located in the north of the island, just a 5-minute scooter ride from the aforementioned Nai Thon Beach. It is a tiny hidden cove shaped like a crescent moon. Park your scooter right by the road and in about 2 minutes you’ll be in paradise. You will enjoy undisturbed relaxation and an authentic atmosphere there. There is one local restaurant on the beach where you can buy cold drinks or snacks.

Haad Laem Sing Beach

Well, our favorite beach in Phuket is definitely Haad Laem Sing Beach. It is a hidden beach that most tourists only admire from the viewpoint along the road. This is mainly because access to the beach is a little more complicated. But it’s nothing that can’t be handled.

There are two ways to get to the beach. The first ine is be foot through the forest, which takes about 10 minutes. The route starts on the far left side of Surin Beach, from where there are very good signs leading to the beach itself. The second option is to take a water taxi from Surin Beach, which costs around 200 THB per person. There is one local restaurant on the beach and a few sun loungers that you can rent. For us, it is definitely the most beautiful beach in all of Phuket!

Nui Beach

It is a tiny beach that gives the impression of being private because there are not many people there. The main reason for this is that access to the beach is a little more complicated. The road leading directly to the beach is not very well constructed, so we do not recommend traveling here on your own scooter unless you have sufficient experience. However, you can leave your scooter parked up there and travel here by taxi, which will cost you 200 THB for a round trip. Another option is to rent a quad bike or walk, which will take you about 30 minutes. Entrance to the beach costs 100 THB per person.

There are restaurants and sun loungers on the beach, so you can easily spend the whole day here. It is not as remote as Leam Sing or Banana Beach, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches Phuket has to offer.

Bangkok is exactly the kind of city that you either love or need to give it a second chance. It is noisy, hot, chaotic… but also full of colors, flavors, and experiences you will never forget.

Modern shopping centers mix with traditional temples, luxurious rooftop bars with stalls where you can get Pad Thai for a few euros. If you’re heading to Bangkok and don’t know where to start, here are 10 places that we think are definitely worth visiting.

Our list of places combines culture, entertainment, shopping, and gastronomy.

Grand Palace

The Grand Palace was built in 1782 and is considered one of the most important monuments in Thailand. It is a large complex, which also includes the famous Wat Phra Kaew, located along the Chao Phraya River. It is currently used for various ceremonial events, as the Dusit Palace is home to the Thai royal family. The complex includes an emerald Buddha, whose clothing is changed three times a year to represent the changing seasons (summer, winter, and rainy season).

You will find many golden decorations, murals, and sculptures, as well as gardens with beautifully trimmed trees. Admission is the most expensive of all the temples in Bangkok at 500 THB, but it is definitely worth it. We recommend arriving early in the morning, both because of the crowds of tourists and because of the heat. And don’t forget to wear appropriate clothing, as entry is only permitted with your shoulders and knees covered.

Chinatown

Bangkok’s Chinatown is a completely different world in the middle of the city. If you love food, the atmosphere of night markets, and a healthy dose of chaos, then you have to experience this place for yourself. The narrow streets are lined with street stalls selling everything from legendary dim sum to exotic delicacies that you might not even want to know what they are. The air is filled with the aroma of spices, grilled meat, and sweet tea, while red lanterns, golden signs, and traditional Chinese temples flash before your eyes.

Chinatown isn’t just about food, it’s an experience for all the senses that will show you a different side of Bangkok. We recommend coming in the evening after dark, when the whole neighborhood is beautifully lit up.

Tichuca Rooftop Bar

There are so many rooftop bars in Bangkok that it’s really hard to find the best one. The selection factors may include, for example, location, entrance fee, or whether it is necessary to reserve a table in advance. Since we were staying in the Sukhumvit area and looking for something last minute without reservations or admission fees, we decided to visit Tichuca Rooftop Bar.

It is a bar with a unique design, reminiscent of a colorful octopus. at 46th floor, which offers a 360-degree view of the entire city of Bangkok. The bar is open every day from 5 p.m., and we recommend arriving as early as possible to secure a spot and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho is one of the most iconic temples in Bangkok and a place you definitely shouldn’t miss. The main attraction is a huge statue of a reclining Buddha, which is 46 meters long and 15 meters high. However, the temple complex is much larger and less crowded than other tourist spots in the city, which is another reason why we liked it so much. Another advantage is that the entrance fee is lower here – 300 THB.

To visit it, you need to have your knees and shoulders covered. If you don’t have one, you’ll find many street vendors selling sarongs or iconic elephant pants before you enter. The temple is located near the aforementioned Grand Palace, so you can easily visit both in one day.

Lumphini Park

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, Lumphini Park is the perfect place to relax. This spacious city park offers peaceful lakes, jogging trails, and picnic areas. The biggest surprise, however, are the huge lizards that roam freely here. They are not dangerous, but their size will definitely surprise you!

Lumphini is great for walking, boating, or just taking a break and soaking up the calmer atmosphere of Bangkok. The park is open daily from early morning until evening (usually from 4:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.), admission is free, and the best time to visit is early in the morning or late afternoon when the temperature is more pleasant. The easiest way to get here is by subway (MRT). The Lumphini stop is right at the park entrance.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

If you want to experience the true atmosphere of Bangkok and pick up some interesting souvenirs, clothing, or local specialties, Chatuchak Weekend Market is a place you shouldn’t miss. This market is one of the largest markets in the world, with more than 15,000 stalls. From vintage items, handmade decorations, clothing, and furniture to live animals (yes, they have those too!). Be prepared for crowds, a lively atmosphere, and bargaining, as prices are often negotiable.

There are also great food stalls here. We recommend stopping here to try the Peking duck soup. The market is only open on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., so plan your visit for these days. There is no fee for entering the market. The easiest way to get here is by subway (MRT) or train; the Chatuchak Park or Mo Chit stops are right at the market entrance.

Terminal 21

Modern shopping centers are another dominant feature of Bangkok. We fell in love with the Terminal 21 shopping center, which is completely different from the others, as it literally makes you feel like you are traveling around the world. Each floor belongs to a specific country, which is reflected not only in the design of the floor, but also in the shops and restaurants you will find there. Among other things, the transitions between floors are designed in the style of airport terminals. You will find floors such as Tokyo, Istanbul, San Francisco, along with an iconic bridge in the center of the shopping mall, and Hollywood.

Khao San Road

Khao San Road is a place you will either love or is enough to see once in your lifetime. It is one of the most famous streets in Bangkok and has been attracting travelers from all over the world for years. You can expect a mix of bars, street food, shops selling everything imaginable (and unimaginable), cheap massages, and a wild atmosphere that really comes alive after dark.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, Rambuttri Road is just a few steps away and offers a similar vibe, but without the noise and crowds. It is ideal for an evening dinner by lantern light or a drink in a bar with pleasant music.

Khao San Road is easily accessible by taxi, tuk-tuk, or bus, but the nearest metro/MRT station is a little further away, so we recommend planning your trip in advance (e.g., by combining a river boat ride with a short walk).

Jodd Fairs

As we mentioned earlier, Bangkok offers a wide variety of street food, where you can enjoy the best Thai specialties for just a few euros. However, if you are looking for a more modern market, we have a solution for you. Jodd’s Fair will win you over with its great atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. There are also outdoor bars with live music, and its location among skyscrapers gives it a completely different atmosphere.

The market is open from 5 p.m. to midnight. During your visit, you will see many restaurants offering huge pork bones or ribs with meat that people eat with their hands. We recommend trying it, it’s completely different from the meat we’re used to at home.

% Arabica Empire Tower

And the cherry on top is Bangkok’s greatest hidden gem. We probably don’t need to tell you that there are many unique cafés offering excellent coffee selections. Whether you are looking for a café with a garden or a place where you can play with four-legged friends while enjoying your coffee, you will find everything here.

However, we were looking for a place where we could enjoy great coffee with a beautiful view. Many people visit Mahanakhon Skywalk, located on the 78th floor, which attracts hundreds of tourists every day. However, be prepared for high admission fees (approx. €30 per person) and crowds of people. But we have an alternative for you! Right across from this famous viewpoint is the Empire Tower, where you will find a café called %Arabica on the 55th floor. It is a well-known chain of cafés with several locations throughout Thailand. There is no entrance fee, so you can enjoy the same beautiful views of the entire city with a great cup of coffee in your hand. You simply must visit this place!

Gili Islands in Indonesia: Which Gili Island to choose and why?

Just a short distance from the famous Bali and Lombok lies a group of three small paradise islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. Each has its own atmosphere, pace of life, and type of travelers it attracts. However, they have something in common – azure sea, white sand, turtles, and the opportunity to experience Indonesia in a slightly different, slower, and more authentic way.

In this article, we will advise you which Gili island is best suited to you, what to expect from each one, and what you should know before visiting. Whether you’re looking for parties, romance, or the perfect escape from the world, the Gili Islands have something to offer.

Although Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno are only a few minutes apart by boat, each has a completely different atmosphere, and that is what makes them so magical. If you know what you’re looking for, we’ll make your choice easier.

Which Gili Island to choose?

Gili Trawangan

Gili T is the largest and liveliest of the three islands. It is often referred to as the biggest party island in Indonesia. It is known for its nightlife, numerous bars, restaurants, diving schools, and social atmosphere. If you are looking for fun, want to meet new people, or are attracted by a combination of active travel and evening entertainment, Gili T is the perfect place for you. During the day, you can enjoy beautiful beaches, cycling around the island, and snorkeling, while in the evening you can enjoy sunsets and music.

Gili Air

This island is the golden mean, neither too busy nor completely quiet. The island has a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere that is particularly suited to couples, digital nomads, and those who want peace and quiet but also appreciate good food, cafes, yoga, or the occasional drink by the beach. If you like a balance between relaxation and activities, Gili Air is probably the “right” place for you. We liked it the most out of the three islands.

Gili Meno

Gili M is the smallest and quietest island of the three. It is often chosen by couples in love or people who want to completely escape from the world and have a social detox. You will find only a few accommodations, quiet beaches, minimal tourists, and a romantic atmosphere. It is also the best place for snorkeling – Meno is home to famous underwater sculptures and colorful marine life, which attracts tourists from the surrounding islands. If you long for peace, quiet, and undisturbed relaxation, this is the island for you.

How to get to the Gili Islands from Bali?

Many people include the northern Gili Islands in their itinerary and travel there from Bali. If you are traveling here from Bali, you will probably go from the port of Sanur, from where the journey takes about 3 hours. The second option is to travel from Padang Harbor, which is particularly worthwhile if you are in the Sidemen or Lempuyang area at the time. From here, the journey to the Gili Islands takes approximately 2 hours.

In both cases, you will have a choice of many companies, whose services usually differ only in the type of boat. Some of them have greater capacity, some less, some are newer, some older. As a rule, this is usually reflected in the ticket price.

You can buy tickets online through 12goasia. If comfort is your main priority and you don’t mind paying a little more, we recommend Einstein. They have spacious ships that are not usually too crowded.

How to get to the Gili Islands from Lombok?

If you are traveling to the Gili Islands from Lombok, a speedboat ticket will cost IDR 85,000, and you can buy tickets directly at the port here. The journey from Bangsal Harbor takes 10–15 minutes, depending on which island you are traveling to (Gili Air is the closest). Boats run regularly throughout the day, but the last ones depart at 4:00 p.m.

You can also choose a cheaper alternative, namely the local ferry, which costs only IDR 18K. It is considerably cheaper, but the boat takes about 30 minutes and you will probably share it with many locals. Departure times may also change, as the ferry needs to collect a certain number of passengers before it can set sail. Ferry tickets can be purchased here.

Best season to travel to the Gili Islands?

The best time to visit the Gili Islands is during the dry season, which lasts from April to October. During these months, you can enjoy sunny weather, calm seas, and ideal conditions for snorkeling and diving. During the rainy season from November to March, it can rain more frequently and the sea tends to be rougher, which does not always allow for comfortable sailing between the islands.

What you should know before visiting the Gili Islands

Although the Gili Islands seem like a tropical paradise cut off from reality (and to a large extent they are), it’s good to know a few practical things before you go there. Even though they are relatively close to the island of Bali, they are completely different in some ways.

The first different thing is religion. While Hinduism prevails in Bali, you will find Muslims on the Gili Islands. This is also why there are mosques on the island. The location of mosques, for example, can be an important factor when choosing accommodation. So if you don’t want to hear their loud ceremonies early in the morning, we recommend choosing accommodation outside of these areas.

Another characteristic thing of the Gili Islands is that there are no cars or motorcycles there. You will enjoy absolute peace and quiet there. You can explore the beauty of the island on foot or by bike. The islands are really tiny, so you can usually cycle around the entire island in about 30-40 minutes.

You will often encounter harnessed horses here, which are used to transport either materials or people. So you can pay for this type of taxi. We didn’t take advantage of it, as we don’t support this kind of activity involving animals, and we walked or cycled everywhere.

When entering/leaving the island, you must pay a harbor tax of IDR 20,000 per person. You need to have cash ready for this. The main reason why people travel to the Gili Islands is their beautiful beaches and, above all, their rich underwater world. Snorkels and fins can be rented at small stands along the beach for about €3 per day.

10 things you should know before travelling to Indonesia

Indonesia is a beautiful and diverse country that really has it all. Whether we’re talking about beautiful beaches, waterfalls and nature, interacting with animals, or adventurous climbs up to peaks and volcanoes. However, it is important to keep in mind that this is an Asian country with a specific culture and lifestyle that you as a tourist have to adapt to.

Travelling in Indonesia is truly an adventure and with these 10 tips, you’ll be ready for your holiday. We’ll talk about what to look out for, how you can save time and money, and also how to enjoy your holiday in Indonesia to the fullest.

1. Indonesia has more than 17 000 islands

Did you know that Indonesia is more than just the world-famous Bali? Many people who come to Indonesia stay all the time only in Bali. It’s a beautiful island, but there’s so much more to see in Indonesia! Moving between islands is really easy and often cheap, so it would be a shame if you stayed in one place all the time.

2. Visa + Forms

You must have a valid tourist visa to enter Indonesia. You can apply online before your arrival at https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/, or you can arrange it directly at the airport. The fee for a 30-day visa is 30€ per person. You can extend your visa for another 30 days without leaving the country. You can do this again online or visit an immigration office.

There are also 2 forms to fill in before entering the country:

Health Pass – which can be found at this link https://sshp.kemkes.go.id/ and you need to save the QR code, which you can then show at the airport.
Customs Declaration – can be completed upon arrival at the airport or online 2 days prior to arrival in Indonesia. The form can be found here: https://ecd.beacukai.go.id/

3. When to travel to Indonesia

The advantage of Indonesia is that the high season there is right during the European summer holidays. As a rule, there is an alternating rainy season and a dry season. The dry season begins in March and ends in October. The main season is considered to be the months of May – September, when the weather is most stable. However, if you arrive between March and May, you will avoid the crowds of tourists. You will enjoy better prices for accommodation and the advantage is also that the nature is green after the rainy season and the waterfalls are massive.

This does not apply in specific areas such as Raja Ampat, where the high season is mainly determined by animal migration. You can read all about the last paradise of Raja Ampat on this link.

4. Transport via 12go.asia

Many times you will be moving between the islands by boat. If you want to make it easier for yourself, we recommend downloading the 12go.asia app, where you’ll find a list of all the carriers in the area. You simply choose a price, date and time that suits you and off you go!

Our tip is to choose transports in the morning, when the weather is much more stable, so the sea conditions are better.

5. The best local specialties are in Warungs

If you are coming to Indonesia to taste local specialties, warungs will be your best friends. These are small local restaurants or shops where you can get tasty and cheap food. Typical Indonesian specialities include Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mie Goreng (fried noodles) or Chicken Satay (chicken skewers in peanut sauce).

6. How to Avoid Bali Belly

Many people are discouraged from going to Indonesia by the so-called Bali Belly. These are stomach problems that can affect tourists travelling to Asia for the first time. Your body can react very sensitively to certain things. We spent 4 months in Indonesia and never had any such problems. Here is some advice on how to protect yourself from health problems as a precaution:

Never drink tap water or use it to brush your teeth. Our organism may not be used to the bacteria that are in it and this can cause health problems.
Bring probiotics. We brought local probiotics on our travels.
Read restaurant reviews – in today’s modern age, it’s really easy to avoid places where you may be in danger of spoiled food.
Order local food at local restaurants. In some warungs they have
international dishes such as Spaghetti Bolognese or pizza. It is not, of course
rule that these dishes must be bad, but there is of course a higher chance than when
you get e.g. rice with chicken, of which they sell hundreds every day.

7. Search for accommodation on the AGODA platform

Even though people often use Booking or Airbnb to travel, things work a little differently in Asia. Agoda is a very popular platform in Indonesia, where you can often find the same accommodation offers, but at much better prices than on other platforms. You can save tens of euros.

8. Local SIM cards

If you’re travelling outside Europe, you’ll probably need to address the issue of mobile data sooner rather than later. In Indonesia, we recommend buying a local SIM card, which usually has a limited validity (e.g. 30 days). Here you can buy different packages that contain different amounts of data. You can find it in small tourist stands – look for the TELKOMSELL sign – it’s the best operator with the best coverage all over Indonesia.

ATTENTION! If you’re planning to travel to more than one island, buy a national SIM card, as some of them are limited to certain territories – e.g. data valid only in Bali or only in Lombok.

9. Not a step without topical repellent

Another threat that many travelers fear is Dengue fever. It is a viral infection that is transmitted from mosquitoes to humans. We therefore recommend regular use of topical repellent, which you can buy for a few cents at any local store. We like the Soffell brand with the pink lid (see photo).

10. Download the GRAB app

Even though we are used to apps like Bolt or Uber in Europe, you will rarely find them in Indonesia. However, an alternative is the GRAB application, which works on exactly the same principle. You can order a car, but also a motorbike, which we used especially in areas with worse traffic such as. Canggu or Uluwatu. It can save you a lot of time on transfers. Another alternative is the Gojek app.

However, these apps don’t work absolutely everywhere. You won’t find them on local islands like Sumba, or Lombok.

Tip: If you need a taxi for a specific time, we recommend booking it the day before as a “Scheduled Ride”. Usually the driver confirmed such a ride within a few minutes and we didn’t have to stress in the morning whether we would get a taxi and arrive at the airport on time.

BONUS TIP FOR WOMEN – bring tampons from home!

If you’re travelling to Indonesia and your days are ahead of you, I recommend bringing tampons from home as they’re a really scarce commodity in Indonesia. Not only are they very difficult to get hold of, but the price is also extremely high. For example for a pack of 6 OB tampons you will pay 6€. If you didn’t bring them, the GUARDIANS Pharmacy may be a lifesaver.
